ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
Paperboard versus plastic packaging

For many years the paperboard carton prevailed as the most inexpensive and environmentally-friendly container for the retail delivery of liquids. However, most consumers hated opening them. So to combat complaints from consumers, carton manufacturers developed easy-opening plastic tops for their cartons and some retailers moved entirely into plastic bottles.
Unfortunately, this additional plastic in our packaging waste cycle dramatically increases the amount of non-biodegradable plastic in our landfill sites and inflates the cost of packaging liquids. Not all countries apply strict recycling of plastic refuse. In many areas - the UK included - much of it ends up in an ever-increasing number of landfill sites where it will take approximately 450 years to degrade.

Conversely, paperboard cartons are made from trees harvested from replanted, sustainable forests, and are therefore altogether more environmentally-friendly.

Unlike plastic, which has an estimated life of 450 years in landfill sites, paperboard biodegrades in a matter of months in similar conditions.

CARTON MATE helps to keep the plastic out of liquid packaging.
