Old War Horse Guestbook Page

Sadly, due to the pressure of unwanted attention from commercial spammers, the War Horse Guest Book was closed to new entries in May 2004 and taken down, but the entries up to that date were saved and are displayed here out of respect for the crew of the War Horse and all those visitors who placed legitimate and welcomed entries in the book, plus, of course, Carl Hannon whose initial idea the War Horse site was.

At the very bottom of this page there is a facility for downloading this entire guest book in MS Word format for those who wish to do so.

If your interest in the War Horse and the 385th Bomb Group extends to Photo Album CDs and DVDs about its men and machines, please click here to be redirected.

Click here to return to the War Horse.

Your visit is appreciated.

One more thing. My father saved a $1 silver certificate called a short snorter which contained the names of 11 crew members who crossed the Atlantic en route to their duty stations I presume with the 385th BG. They arrived on January 14th, 1944. Here are the names from the "Short Snorter" as best I can decipher them. Karl A. Dittmer Robert B. Graves Floyd A. Schumaker, Jr. Bruce F. Lowe Pat Sullivan E. Townsend H. R. Dunnon C. R. Cragoe Louis Wm Hick Frank I. Davidson, Jr. C. M. Mayor If anyone knows of the whereabouts of any of these individuals I would be most appreciative to hear back from you. Thanks, Steve Schobel

My dad, Sumner Schobel, was a co-pilot/pilot with the 549th BS. Do you have any information on him. His B-17, crew members, missions. I am putting together a memorial in his honor. Anything you have will help me. He flew 30 combat missions and was awarded the DFC and other medals. Thanks, Steve Schobel

I have visited your website and the Mighty 8th museum. I recently ran into Frank Murphy who said he wrote the book "Luck of the Draw". I have not been able to locate it and would like to know if you could provide a lead. I am ex Air Force (TAC) and teach a graduate MBA course. I use the movie 12 O'Clock as example of different leadership styles. Great job on your website! I was on several rotations to Mildenhall, England and Frank said he just returned from a speaking engagement there! Thanks, Patt Taylor

I am looking for former members of the 109th Observation Squadron who served with me at Esler Field, near Alexandria, Louisiana in 1942. We then moved to England in August of 1942. The first airfield we went to was at Atcham in England and then on to Newbury. Our next stop was to a field near Shrewsbury in Shropshire, England where we stayed for about 15 months. We were then moved to the South to prepare for the invasion. While there, most of the unit was transferred to Headquarters Squadron, 100th Fighter Wing which was part of the 9th Air Force and was sent to France in June. I am looking for members of the kitchen crew – Tommy Thompson, Paul Tourville and Vic Trom who were all from Minnesota; Joe O’Connell and Joe Catanzero who were from London, Ohio, Leroy Kenworthy who was from Mooresville, Indiana, William Ward who was from Brooklyn, NY and married a girl from Shrewsbury and stayed over there and John Wagner (I don’t remember where he was from).

I joined the Royal Air Force in September, 1940, and trained as a navigator. Flew in the Halifax and Lancaster bombers of RAF Squadron 103, Elsham Wolds, Lincolnshire, England. We were shot down the night of March 9/10, 1043. My third POW camp was Stalag 357 at Fallingbostel in 1944. When the air-raid syrens sounded, we would go outside and lie on our backs on the ground and watch - and cheer - the hundreds of 'silver birds' (B-17s) flying overhead in perfect formation. The cheering of 5,000 British and Commonwealth airmen got to the Germans after a while, so they made us stay inside our wooden barracks, for our safety - so they said! In my book "Death on Dark Wings" (a biography) published in 1973, this is mentioned. I am currently writing an autobiography, in which I say what a great boost it was to our morale to see those Flying Fortresses dominating the daylight skies over the German hinterland. I would love to put a photo of a B-17 in my book. Better still, a photo of format

I really like this site. I'm very interested in WW II history, especially B17s. I hope to one day get to ride along for a flight in one. God bless all who served aboard them, those in support on the ground, and those who have answered the call each time freedom has been threatened in our great country.
